Interviewed by Mildred Lynn
Karen Brown and Sadie

Rosemary Davies-Janes is a motivational speaker, personal brand expert and host of the weekly talk show The Many Faces of Coaching™. She is also the founder of MIBOSO, a personal brand agency committed to creating “a world where everyone knows what makes them unique and leverages this knowledge to reach their potential and realize their vision through living their life's purpose." MIBOSO’s Authentic Personal Branding (APB) concept attracts people who want to make a difference by fulfilling their life purpose, and by so doing, finding true meaning and satisfaction. Thank you Rosemary!

What does the MIBOSO mean?

Miboso, derived from the first two letters of Mind, Body and Soul, reflects our holistic personal branding approach. Weaving our client’s values, strengths, talents, preferences, dreams, desires and passions into a fully integrated life strategy enables them to live their life’s purpose, reach their potential and achieve great personal fulfillment. It also gives us the opportunity to ask the deep questions that are crucial to our clients’ success!

Do your clients express themselves from a place of life balance and integrity?

People who feel as if they are out of integrity or off balance often come to us for the APB that will help them consciously honor themselves in all that they be and do. Let me explain how that works. When we’re branding a product, it is ASSIGNED a personality, attitudes and opinions that must be evolved, grown and managed over time. Conversely, an APB is based on our client’s ACTUAL personality, attitudes and opinions. There’s no need to manage an APB as it’s based on who they truly are—so an individual can never go “off brand.”

What role does confidence play in the mind-body-sprit branding process? Why do most people have an affinity for playing small?

Most people are totally unaware of their greatness. I use the term “genius” which shocks most people, as they don’t believe they could possess anything that fits that description. The truth is that we, as humans, have been socialized to downplay our strengths and talents. We are taught not to be “too big for our boots”, but the price paid for socialized modesty is that we lose perspective on what we do that’s remarkable and lose confidence in our ability to do it. We “settle for” what we know is safe and easy, rather than reaching for the stars…. Of course there are exceptions to this rule—the “superstar” performers, authors, statesmen, etc., that we all admire. Most people don’t realize that there’s a star inside them just waiting to be released. It’s my honor and privilege to be able to provide that support to people who have the courage to face and realize their potential.

How does a person feel when they are in alignment with their personal brand?

It’s a feeling that athletes describe as “being in the zone.” All systems are “go” and you are playing full out in a game that you adore. Head, heart and hands are all performing at their optimum levels. When people are in touch with themselves at this deep level, other addictive and thrill seeking behaviors simply fall away. Once you’ve experienced it, there’s nothing that matches the thrill of being high on living life fully.

Is there a simple exercise that you use to connect with your higher consciousness when tackling your next life adventure?
It’s not all that simple, but it’s not all that challenging either. We have a new personal decision making tool called The Strengths & Values Matrix. It guides you through assessing whether your choices are more closely aligned with your strengths and values, or with your fears and weaknesses. It sounds incredible but many of our decisions are unconsciously driven by our fears and weaknesses. And that keeps us playing very small games, or repeating the same mistakes, over and over. For anyone who’s watched the movie Groundhog Day, you know JUST how frustrating that can be!
What resources would you recommend to a beginner in the mind-body-spirit arena; for one who is in “why would anyone listen to me” stage?
It’s surprisingly easy! Find 10 people you trust, and ask each of them “What is it about who I am and/or what I do that is unique, special and different from how others are and/or what they do?” (Use those exact words.) What is impossible for you to perceive about yourself, others can spot instantly. Look for common themes in their responses and you will pinpoint your genius. And be ready to be on a high from this feedback for the next few weeks. It’s typically very moving and incredibly affirming.
Who are the movers & shakers in your field?

If you’re new to Personal Branding, Tom Peter’s classic The Brand YOU 50 is a great place to start. In fact, gaining a good understanding of traditional branding will give you the best ability to discern which personal branding approach is the best fit for you. Michael Eisner of Disney talks about the brand as being, “like a pointillist painting … everything you do for your brand is a point on the canvas…. If you want to be strong, each point along the way has to be as close to perfect as possible.” Likewise a well developed personal brand is one in which your written and spoken words are as one, where you present in person exactly the same way you show up in print or on-line. What you say you stand for, you stand for, no matter what the season or circumstance. It’s very difficult to brand yourself as you need the perspective of an objective outsider, so choose someone with whom you will be comfortable disclosing anything and everything—they’ll need to ask to do a good job!
